12/5/07: Don't Leave At-Risk Youth in the Dust!
The way we currently handle young people who commit crimes is to either slap them on the hand or throw them into a youth prison that just facilitates their self-destructive path. Support comprehensive rehabilitation programs for at-risk youth! American Humane's Restorative Justice for Youth program aims to reverse these trends.
In their program, young offenders are required to accept responsibility for their crimes and must take an active role in repairing the damage their crime has created. Also, victims are empowered to voice the impacts of crime, their current needs and to resolve their feelings toward the crime and communities can enjoy a lower crime rate and safer neighborhoods.
When youth understand how their actions affect others, they are less likely to repeat their offenses. Programs like Restorative Justice can change lives for the better.

There are effective programs that help youth to understand how their actions affect others, and help them to NOT become a repeat offender.
