Camel shot to death

Normangee, FL

August 3, 2006

The Leon County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the shooting death of a camel that was one of several living on an exotic game ranch off FM3 in rural Normangee.  The Ranch owner found his camel in a field with wounds to the head.  Investigators state the animal was apparently shot several times with 000 buckshot.

Sheriff Mike Price stated that it is not uncommon for people to shoot at animals from the road in a rural county like Leon.

A veterinarian recovered several pellets from the camel’s skull.  Photographs were taken and shell casings were collected as evidence that week, but no weapon was found and there are no suspects or witnesses as of Wednesday, August 3rd.

Leon County Officials stated the value of the animal, estimated at $1,500 to $20,000, qualifies the case for felony criminal mischief charges.
