Dognapping and starving 4 dogs, promoting dog fighting

Police found six starved dogs in the Buffalo New York home of Carr. Two Rottweilers appeared to be going hungry in preparation for dogfights. The other four dogs (collies, a Shih Tzu and a mutt) were going to be food for the Rottweilers.

  Police say the dogs were so thin, they couldn't count the ribs and shoulder blades. The Police have also found the carcasses of other dogs that had been partially eaten and killed in dogfights in Carr's Miller Avenue neighborhood. The dogs were placed in the care of the Erie County SPCA.

Police do not know where Carr, age 32, got the dogs, but the authorities have had several reports of dognapping in the neighborhood.

The malnourished dogs are now in the care of the SPCA. The SPCA estimates that the cost to care for the 6 dogs will be about $3000 during the first 2 weeks. 4 of the dogs are 10% to 50% below their normal body weight, requiring special caging, rest and special dietary measures to recover properly.

The District Attorney Frank J. Clark said his office routinely takes a "no-plea posture" in animal abuse cases and this case will be no different. If convicted the 3 misdemeanor counts of torturing and failure to care for the dogs, Carr could face up to three years in prison and $3000 in fines.

Update 5/10/01:

Carr pleaded guilty, got 60 days in jail and was placed on 3 yrs. probation during which he may not own any animals and he must attend family counseling.
