The Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Ontario SPCA) has laid eight charges under the animal cruelty section of the Criminal Code of Canada against two Toronto-area individuals. The charges - four per person - pertain to the conditions of kittens and dogs removed last November by the Ontario SPCA from the PJs Pet Centre at Yorkdale Mall, Toronto.
Charged are Suzanne Cohen/Weinstein, a Thornhill, Ontario based animal broker, and Danielle Nesbitt, an employee of the Yorkdale PJs store.
Charges are as follows:
* On or about 31 October, 2001, did willfully neglect or fail to provide food, water, shelter and care for three kittens;
* On or about 31 October, 2001 to 1 November, 2001, did willfully neglect or fail to provide shelter and care for nine puppies;
* On or about 31 October, 2001 to 1 November, 2001, did willfully neglect or fail to provide food, water, shelter and care for three puppies; and
* On or about 31 October, 2001 to 5 November, 2001, did willfully neglect or fail to provide shelter and care for one puppy.
First court appearance for the individuals is April 3, 2002 at Criminal Court, 1000 Finch Avenue West, Toronto.
