36 cats rescued from neglect

Doraville, GA

January 31, 2007

36 cats are now in the care of local animal rescue and care centers after they were seized from Donna Wheatley’s home on Wednesday, January 31stWheatley was cited with 36 counts of animal neglect after Gwinnett County Animal Control investigated the home several times and deemed the residence unsuitable for the animals.

Cpl. Darren Moloney, Gwinnett County Police Department Spokesman, stated Police and Animal Control obtained a search warrant to enter the home on Wednesday. The cats were living inside the single home at 4678 Ash Street in unsanitary and unhealthy conditions, eating and defecating in the same areas of the home. All the cats were checked by on-scene veterinarians and many were in need of care.

Wheatley voluntarily released all 36 cats to Animal Control and they were taken to Fur Kids Cat Rescue, Good Mews Cat Rescue and the Lawrenceville-Suwanee Animal Hospital.

Update 2/11/07:  Upon further investigations it was discovered that Wheatley had similar problems a few years ago.  It was recommended then that the cats be removed from the home.  Because of the numbers of cats, they were set to 3 different locations.
