Dogfighting ring busted, ordered to pay for care

Thomasville, GA   Thomas County

August 30, 2005

Dexter Young, arrested on animal cruelty charges last year, was ordered this week (August 7, 2006), to pay the Thomasville-Thomas County Humane Society nearly $20,000 for the care of his animals.  For the last year, the Humane Society has had to pay board and overtime pay for workers who cared for Young’s 11 dogs.  Now, they are getting their money back.

Young was charged with one count of Aggravated Cruelty to Animals for fighting his Rottweilers and Pit Bulls.  This week a judge ordered him to repay $18,700 for their care.  Young also received 3 years probation, which the Humane Society deems as not a tough enough punishment compared to the dogs sentence.  The dogs were all put down this week.

The dogs had to be destroyed because of the training they were given – they could never be trusted.

Ricardo Mitchell and Larry Hansell also faced misdemeanor charges at the same time Dexter Young was charged.  Both Mitchell and Hansell paid minimal fines.
