The dog was rescued by the Kingsport Animal Shelter and received the medical attention he needed. His rib cage was visible, he was covered with small cuts and his ears were caked with ticks.

The dog, now named Duke, was given another chance by the Harris family.  A lot of publicity he received in the Times-News made him a popular dog.  Many people came in or called for a chance to adopt him, but the family that came in first was the one the shelter took through the adoption process.  A local veterinarian also helped by donating his services and gave Duke his shots and furnished him with future neutering surgery.  Monetary donations received by the shelter to assist with Duke’s recovery far exceeded the medical bill so the remaining funds are being used to help other animal care costs at the shelter.

After an inspection of the Harris home by shelter officials, Duke, who one week earlier was trapped in a huge trash bin in 100-degree heat, was loaded up and headed for his new home outside of Kingsport near Bloomingdale. Besides having two other running mates to play with, Duke now has a sizable amount of property to explore and a family that decided to take a chance on a coon dog left for dead.
