Pit Bull shot by Officer at YMCA |
Fort Lauderdale, FL |
August 9, 2006 |
On Wednesday, August 9th, a Fort Lauderdale Police Officer shot and killed a Pit Bull after the dog charged him, police stated. Just after 10 a.m., a YMCA employee called police about a Pit Bull running loose near the Y at 408 NW 14th Terrace. The employee was concerned that the dog might bite a child.
Police called the Broward County Animal Care and Regulation Division as a Fort Lauderdale Officer responded to the call. When the officer arrived, Police Spokeswoman Kathy Collins stated that the dog charged the officer. The officer expected to suffer serious injury from the dog and shot it. The dog died at the scene. Tarnell Carroll, spokeswoman for County Animal Control stated that the dog was not wearing a tag. No owners were at the scene.
The Police Officer, who has been with the department for more than 10 years, will face a routine internal review. Police would not release his identity.
Animal Control found another Pit Bull nearby at 417 NW 14th Avenue, chained to a fence without shelter or water. The dog was also not wearing tags.
This was the second fatal Pit Bull shooting in recent weeks. Hollywood Police shot at three Pit Bulls during a July 29th raid at the home of an alleged drug dealer. The dogs charged officers who were executing a search warrant. One dog was shot dead, one was injured and the other unharmed.
Pit Bulls are illegal in Miami-Dade, but are legal in most of Broward.
