Herd of neglected horses found by rescue group and Sheriff

Greenbriar, AR Faulkner County

August 13, 2006

25 neglected, starving, injured and dead horses were found after a neighbor complained to the Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society on August 13th.  The owner has been given thirty days to help his horses before the Sheriff’s Department steps in.

It was reported that the owner runs a feed store just down the road.

6 of the horses have been saved but the owner refused to release the entire herd.

Tina Shalmy of the Bluebonnet Equine Society stated that the animals were so starved that when they first arrived, the horses were swarming around them very aggressively thinking that they might have food.

Shalmy states that situations like this happen all the time in Arkansas.  The agency has received over a hundred complaints of abuse since January and they are now in desperate need for homes for all the rescued horses.

If anyone is interested in helping by volunteering, sending donations or adopting an animal, please contact the Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society at 888-542-5163.
