Henry C. Agonis slashed dogs throat, then shot his dog to death New Ipswich, NH September 21, 2001

Henry C. Agonis , 32, of 331 Ashby Road, killed the Labrador mix at his home Friday, Police Chief Timothy Connell said.

The dog lived at the home, so Connell presumes Agonis owned the animal. The chief said he has never seen an act like this.

"I've seen other animal cruelty acts," Connell said. "I see them all as senseless. If someone has an animal (he or she) doesn't want, place it with someone else."

Police received a report of a possible domestic disturbance, Connell said. En route to the home, police discovered Agonis was seen armed with a shotgun, the chief said.

By the time police arrived -- including officers from Greenville and Mason -- Agonis had put the shotgun back in the house, Connell said.

Police weren't aware of what happened until they surveyed the property, Connell said. Agonis then resisted arrest, the chief said.

He was held at Hillsborough County House of Corrections in Manchester until he posted $10,000 bail.

Agonis is charged with cruelty to animals and resisting arrest.

Update 11/3/05:  Agonis, now age 36, plead no contest to open container and reckless driving and was fined $325, license suspended for 60 days.  Complaints of transportation of an alcoholic beverage, conduct after an accident, speeding and aggravated driving while intoxicated were dropped.
