Beaten Dog found behind Pet Adoption Center

Lufkin, TX

July 19, 2006

In the hot July sun, Kim Frels, Supervisor of The Humane Society of Angelina County discovered a Shih Tzu lying in the grass behind the adoption center building where no one usually parks. Normally, she does not park there.  Though discovered before it was almost too late, there is still a chance that it may be too late to save the grey and white dog dubbed Hercules.

Hercules’ hair was so matted that he was unable to open his mouth.  He has a broken rear leg that was never cared for, making him a three-legged dog.  He tested positive for heartworms and due to his age, he suffers from cataracts.

After being shaved down to the skin, Hercules is now able to stand for the first time in a week. Though he gained two pounds and remains emaciated at 10 pounds, he is still half the weight of a normal Shih Tzu.  It will be awhile before he is stronger and able to walk around better.

The shelter believes Hercules was an indoor dog as he did not have one flea on his body. They are hopeful that someone will recognize him so the owner can be prosecuted.  Angelina County Sheriff’s Deputy Monica Hall stated that any person positively identified as his abuser would be prosecuted to the fullest extent should the county attorney decide to pursue charges.  Assistant County Attorney Cary Kirby said the county attorney’s office can go to court to seize an animal they believe has been abused, depending on the facts of the case and evidence.
