(Photo courtesy of KFSN ABC30)  A dead Border Collie-mix was found hanging from a tree in the Madera Ranchos shortly before 7:30 am on Tuesday, August 1st.  The Sheriff’s Department investigating the case as animal cruelty, found the dead dog in a field on Road 38 between Dublin and Avenue 13.  Based on the animal’s condition, they believe the killing took place sometime during the night.

When caught, the perpetrator(s) could face felony animal cruelty charges.  Deputies are asking that anyone with information about the dog’s death to contact them at 675-7770 or toll free 800-560-4911.  Calls can also be made to Crime Stoppers at 498-7876.  All calls made to Crime Stoppers are kept anonymous and a reward of up to $1,000 is paid for information to the arrest and conviction of a wanted person.

Update 8/7/06:

People from across the state of California are opening their hearts and their wallets, in hopes that the person who hung a boarder collie from a tree in the Madera Ranchos last week will be caught. The boarder collie, which animal control officers estimate was between one and two years old, is being preserved inside a freezer, so if and when someone is arrested, there is evidence in the event that a necropsy is necessary to determine the cause of death. Currently it is being assumed that the rope was the cause of death.

The Madera County Sheriff’s Department has been overwhelmed with responses they have received after the shocking discover of animal cruelty. On Monday afternoon, July 31st, an individual called from Los Angeles to pledge $1,000 to the reward fund. Piles of letters, most containing checks, have been flowing into the Sheriff’s office. They have been contacted as far south as Los Angeles, Pismo, San Francisco, Fresno and Santa Clara.

Finding who is responsible was one of the final wishes from a woman in Walnut Creek. A woman in the Bay Area who is stricken with cancer and does not have long to live, pledged $900. So far, nearly $4,000 has been pledged in reward money and it keeps coming in.
If anyone has information on this case they can contact the Madera County Sheriff’s Office at 1-800-560-4911.
