Jax Lovelace

Horse emaciated - ~400 pounds underweight

Eaton, CO

Jul. 18, 2006

Lovelace, owner of Eaton Feed and Grain was cited for animal cruelty and neglect. Animal Control Officer Gary Schwartz issued the midsemeanor summons but has asked that the DA consider a felony summons.

The 20 year old mare, now named “Mississippi” is 300-400 pounds underweight. She weighs 675 pounds but should weigh about 1,000. She gave birth to a filly last year.

Carrie Terroux of Greeley, CO responded to Lovelace’s request for someone to adopt an unbreedable horse.  Terroux called the Weld County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Officer and Dr. Lawrence Mackey, DVM of Greeley, CO who checked the horse and determined she was grossly underfed.

The horse is now under the care of a horse rescue group, who is feeding her and trying to save the mares life.

Update 8/2/06:

Missisippi died July 25th. Weld District Attorney Ken Buck droopped the misdemeanor charges today, but they maybe refiled as a felony, pending the necropsy rusults on the horse.
