Jeffery Paul Jones, 42, of 3557 Napier Avenue in Macon, was accused of killing and nearly decapitating a 9-year old mixed-breed Bulldog named Emax, and was arrested on a charge of aggravated animal cruelty on August 2nd. He stated he was avenging the death of his chickens.

In his police statement, Jones admitted killing the dog and compared it to ‘pest control’. The dog was killed on May 19th near Jones’ former home at 178 Hill Street, near downtown Macon. Neighbor Marty Willet stated he buried the dog but authorities asked to exhume the dog’s body for evidence. Willet stated that when he first found the dog’s body, he discovered the head was cut down the middle between the eyes. A blood trail was found down the street and around the house. The dog belonged to Willett’s friend, Otis Redding III, son of Macon music legend, Otis Redding who died in 1969.
Redding said he received Emax as a 3-month old puppy from a friend in Dodge County and named him after his new Emax keyboard. The dog had been abused as a puppy and was skittish around people. Redding stated his friends sometimes called Emax ‘Mr. Pitiful’ – an apparent tribute to one of his father’s songs. Emax had a bad hip, hobbled on one leg and rarely ventured from the yard. He also stated that though Emax was his dog, he was also a neighborhood dog. Willet stated he doubted Redding’s dog could have killed the chickens – ‘he was a wimp, going blind and limping around’.
Jones had recently moved from his Hill Street home to Napier Avenue. He had set up animal traps in his backyard after the death of his chickens. Keeping chickens inside the city limits is a violation of a city ordinance, as is letting dogs run freely.
