Puppy rescued from hot car by firefighters

Fayetteville, NC

August 4, 2006

Fayetteville firefighters, for the second time this week, had to break into a locked car in a public parking lot to rescue a puppy left in extreme heat.  Commander Richard Bradshaw stated it happened about 5 p.m. on Friday, August 4th, at the Skibo Road Wal-Mart.

Bradshaw stated that someone walking through the parking lot saw the 8-week old puppy inside the car, panting and foaming at the mouth.  The windows were partially opened.  The temperature inside the car was determined by firefighters to be 118 degrees at that time. Outdoor temperature that day was near 100 degrees.

Firefighters managed to open a door, retrieve the puppy and give it cold water. They calmed the puppy to bring its heart rate down.

The driver of the car, James Wright, 35, of the 700 block of North Street, was cited for animal cruelty.

Wright stated he went into the store to cash his paycheck and planned to be inside for just a short time.
