13-year-old
7th grader Tim Eisemann from Babylon, NY has taken action against his local
school district on an educational program that intially raises ducklings but
then returns them to be slaughtered for food. Tim wants to be sure the value
of life is taught. "Every year thousands of classrooms across the country
participate in what they call 'hatchling programs' where fertilized eggs from
chickens or ducks are place in elementary school classrooms to be incubated",
states Susan Marion, founder/director of Angel's Gate Hospice & Rehabilitation
Center for Animals in Fort Salonga, NY.
Eisemann was determined to find the 4 ducklings he and his classmates had
nurtered for over 2 months and not send them back to the fate that awaited
them. Angel's Gate opened its doors to Tims's ducklings along with 18 more
as Tim called all the other classes in the school that had also hatched chicks.
He wanted to save them all. According to the law, no student is oblicated
to participate in experiments that are against their values.
Alicyn Leigh of the Long Island Press writes: Concerned people like Eisemann are an asset to our society. With so many humans on our planet who have absolutely no regard for animals whatsoever, he gives hope that our children, who are the future of animal welfare, will make a difference. Even at his young age, he clearly understands the value of life. (Photo's courtesy of The Long Island Press)

It took 3 hours and rescue teams from Kearny, Newark and North Arlington to
save a dog stranded in the Passaic River.
The Rottweiler mix was slowly drifting on
a chunk of ice before crews were able to successfully and dramatically bring
the animal to shore. The dog was floating 30 feet from the shoreline. The
rescuers went out in a small rowboat, battling currents and avoid ice floes.
Firefighters stood on the Newark and the Kearney sides of the river, in case
either the rescuers or the dog fell in the water. The 40-pound rottweiler,
is about 3-4 years old and resting in the Newark, NJ Animal Shelter. Reference:
