August 7, 2006 |
The Grant County Sheriff’s Department stated that a 13-year old horse on a farm along Grant County Road 500 East, suffered a gunshot wound with the slug entering under its chin and exiting from the right side of its head, between its ear and eye. It is unknown what caliber of weapon was used. It did not appear to be a shotgun. Douglas Wolff who cares for the horse on his farm, believes ‘Little Joe” is one of the luckiest horses he has ever seen.
Grant County Sheriff’s Deputy Jason Ewer stated that the horse remained in good temper, even though the wound indicated that whoever shot the animal had to get close before pulling the trigger. Investigators sated it appeared to have been a point-blank shot designed to kill the animal.
The owner suspects it happened sometime around 6 a.m. on Monday when Little Joe was out in a field, but he stated neither he nor his neighbors heard anything. A friend saw the wound on Tuesday and told Wolff that something was wrong. After looking at the injury, Wolff thought it might be a gunshot wound and called the Grant County Sheriff’s Department.
Little Joe appears to be recovering well.
