Village resident Michael Ogert pleaded guilty to aggravated cruelty to animals, a felony also known as Buster's Law, in Rensselaer County Court, said District Attorney Kenneth R. Bruno.
Ogert will face 6 months in Rensselaer County Jail and 5 years on probation.
"Buster's Law was established to protect innocent animals from just this type of vicious cruelty, and punish individuals who act out violently against them," said Bruno. "Hopefully, this serves as a statement that there are very serious consequences in Rensselaer County for people who would wantonly injure or torture animals. I am going to personally see that this new law is strictly and vigorously enforced."
Ogert pleaded guilty, admitting in court that on Feb.16, he intentionally shot his 10 month old kitten in the head with a blow gun dart at his residence at 16 5th Street injuring, but not killing the animal, Bruno said in a statement.
The police were summoned to the scene, and Ogert was arrested.
In addition to the time he will serve in jail and on probation, Bruno said Ogert will be required to pay any restitution required for veterinary treatment
Sentencing is scheduled for June 1.
