Unknown severely malnourished female mastiff found Sanbornton, NH Belknap County July 28, 2007

The Sanbornton Police Department is investigating what Chief Mark Barton described as a severe case of animal abuse and neglect.

According to the chief, a severely malnourished female mastiff was found Monday on Hunkins Pond in the area of Tower Hill Road in Sanbornton. The animal appeared to have gone without food for an extended period of time.

The abuse and neglect is so severe, Barton said, that most of the muscle tissue is eaten away.

For the dog's breed and size, she should weigh about 80 pounds; however, she weighs approximately 40 pounds, said the police chief. The dog's hind quarters have sunk in and "you can count each of her ribs."

The dog is currently at a local veterinarian undergoing medical care and treatment.

According to Barton, this is one of the most severe cases of animal abuse the Sanbornton Police Department has seen.

He said it is still unknown whether the dog was abandoned or whether it wandered away from its owner.

Anyone who can identify the dog and may have information as to who the owner might be is urged to contact the Sanbornton Police Department at 603-286-4323.
