Vance County Animal Control Chief Alexander Hargrove stated a brown and white pit bull was seen by two of his officers walking in a ‘lethargic state’ in a ditch on Epsom Road. The female pit bull was starved, extremely skinny and dehydrated. Hargrove knew the dog belonged to Odell Terrance Burrell, 28 of 1106 King St. Burrell has been visited by animal control before because the same pit bull had been seen running loose.
After being picked up by animal control, she died 30 minutes later at the animal shelter on Vance Academy Road. Hargrove said the animal just “fell over dead.” She had lost her hair, suffered from mange, and had virtually no muscle mass.
Hargrove stated he went to Burrell's residence to ask him how his dog was without revealing the dog had been picked up by Animal Control. Burrell told Hargrove that his pit bull had been sick, wandering around the yard, and had gotten skinny.
According to the warrant, Burrell unlawfully and willfully did intentionally deprive of necessary sustenance denying of medical attention, and living in unsanitary condition(s).
