Ronald Kingsbury

Operating a rodent business without a license

Swanton, VT

Sept. 2000

Ronald Kingsbury was operating the business, Rodent Hideaway, without a pet merchant license. He was raising rodents in crowded cages in a dirty, unventilated basement and was ordered to close the business or face state and town penalties.

He was selling the rodents to his other business, The Pet Mirage pet store in St. Albans Town and to other pet stores around the state.

The state inspector found the animals to be crowded, in dirty cages and without proper ventilation. This business would not qualify for a license without correcting these violations of animal welfare the inspector said.

Kingsbury said it was not worth making the repairs because he was not making any money and he agreed to move the animals. Kingsbury will be subject to fines if he doesn’t comply.
