Woman kills neighbor’s dog with antifreeze tainted food

Athens, GA

July 18, 2006

Rosa Marie Daniel was arrested on Tuesday, July 18th on animal cruelty charges for allegedly killing a neighbor’s dog with antifreeze-tainted food and causing a second dog to become ill.  It is alleged that Daniel, 58, laced fish with antifreeze.

A Springer Spaniel named Allison perished in January. The fish was found by another neighbor in the dog owner’s backyard.  A neighbor took one of the containers from Daniel’s yard and gave it to police.   A University of Georgia Chemist found it contaminated with antifreeze.  Police were again called to the neighbor’s home on Friday after another dog; a mix-breed Labrador retriever named Sampson became ill – possibly after eating food in Daniels yard.

Athens-Clarke Police Detective Rebecca Taft stated that neighbors suspect Daniel’s involvement because she made it known she ‘hated’ animals but kept containers of food in her yard.  Over the past three years, Taft said Daniel logged about 45 complaints to Athens-Clarke Animal Control and police.

Upon searching Daniel’s home on Tuesday, police found and seized containers of food and two containers of antifreeze – one from a bathroom and another from a storage shed, to be tested.

Daniel, of 355 Prince Ave, was booked into Clarke County Jail on a felony animal cruelty charge for Allison’s death and a misdemeanor cruelty charge for allegedly making the second ill dog.
