Hobbled puppy found bound in own front yard |
Silver Springs, NV |
July 22, 2006 |
A female Border Collie-cross puppy
was confiscated from a Silver Springs man by Lyon County Animal Control after
the man allegedly bound the puppy’s front legs with nylon rope to keep it
from digging. A one-inch nylon strap was wrapped around her feet, held on
with a screw, nut and bolt. The puppy had an infection in one of its feet.
The binds were so tight that it took pliers and a screwdriver to free the
animal from its bobbles. The restraints had also torn one of the puppy’s
dewclaws.
The puppy, named Ruby, was checked by a veterinarian
who cleaned up the infection and wound. It is estimated the 6-month old puppy
had been hobbled for about ten days. There was a concern that the infection
was so far into the paw that it would have to be removed. If the restraint
had been left on any longer, the puppy could have lost her leg.
Upon the owner’s return home, he found the Animal Control Notice and called. He stated the puppy’s feet were bound to stop it from tearing up his landscape. He is fighting the removal of his animal.
The owner
was cited for animal cruelty and will appear in Fernley Justice Court on the citation.
The owner came to the shelter and apologized for his actions,
but Ruby is still under the care of the shelter.
