Inspectors with the Ontario SPCA discovered dogs in great distress from severe untreated tumors. Both dogs had to be euthanized at the Ontario SPCA Centre Veterinary Hospital.
Susan Collier of Markham, Ontario, owner of Rusty, an approximately seven year-old Irish Setter/Retriever mix, pled guilty August 21st in the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket to a charge of causing unnecessary suffering by failing to provide adequate veterinary medical attention. She was sentenced to sixty days house arrest, two years probation and four years prohibition from owning, caring for or living in a residence with, an animal. Costs of $672.57 are to be repaid to the Society, which was also given the right to monitor compliance with the prohibition.
Rusty had been brought to the Ontario SPCA Centre by a Society Inspector, having been discovered thin and with a very large tumor on his rear measuring 18x16cm. This had become a raw, bloody and infected wound. It was estimated that the problem had been untreated for at least a year and had caused great pain and distress. Tissue analysis subsequently showed the tumor to be benign, and therefore possibly treatable had it been attended to at an early stage
