Sylvia Gray, 57, was arrested in May accused of keeping 42 cats, three dogs and six birds in her home and exposing two adopted children to the filth of excrement strewn throughout her home. She pleaded no contest to a reduced charge on Wednesday, July 26th in Grosse Point Farms Municipal Court. Gray faces fines and up to 93 days in jail under reduced charges, by accepting responsibility for one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and one count of animal abuse. She will be sentenced on August 23rd.
Gary had been a volunteer with an animal rescue organization, which claimed she had refused to return cats that she had taken into her home. When police officials searched her home in May, they found the home crowded with animals and in filthy condition. The city ordinance limits homes to 2 cats and 2 dogs.
The children are now living with Gray’s mother. The home on Lakeview Street has been declared uninhabitable and it remains vacant.
The animals are at All About Animals, a rescue organization that will attempt to find them new homes.
