Moira Monahan opened the door of a home in Sacramento's Meadowview neighborhood over the Labor Day weekend and found 130 sets of eyes upon her. Cats lounging on the floor. Cats perched on furniture. Cats prancing across countertops. Cats everywhere.
"I was kind of swimming in cats," said Monahan, an animal welfare volunteer. "It was surreal."
It was an extreme case of a largely hidden phenomenon: the "hoarding" of animals or objects to the point that living conditions become unsafe.
The owners of those cats left them behind when they were evicted from their rental house, and asked for help in finding new homes for the animals. Police were not involved, the cat owners were not charged with abuse, and animal welfare groups quietly tended to the felines.
Update 12/1/09: Most of the cats have been adopted however about a dozen cats are still looking for homes, said cat rescuer Dia Goode.Goode and other animal advocates have spent months working to find homes for 130 cats from the Meadowview house.
To adopt an animal from the Sacramento City Animal Shelter, visit the facility at 2127 Front St. from 11am to 6pm Tuesday through Friday, or Saturday from 10am to 4pm. For more information, call 916-808-7387.
