A collie named Bella was stabbed to death outside her Soldotna home, Alaska State Troopers said.
Troopers said Bella's owner, Lisa Bote, 37, called them around 3:30 a.m. from her house in West Brook subdivision to report that she had been awakened by a prank caller who reportedly asked her, "What are you doing up so late?"
While on the phone, Bote told troopers that her lights had just gone out. Troopers raced over to find that the circuit breaker in the garage had been thrown. The garage was reportedly locked, troopers said, but there was no sign of forced entry. Troopers searched the area for about two hours but found no sign of a suspect, they said. Eventually, they left.
Around 6:20 a.m., Bote called troopers again, this time from a neighbor's house. She told troopers Bella had been stabbed to death and that her phone line had been cut.
Three troopers and police dog Kazzan went back to the house and conducted a thorough "homicide type" investigation, troopers said. Bella's body was taken to a local veterinarian for a necropsy, and the phone company was called to repair the phone line. The investigation continues.
