Greaney, age 75 of Beverly, MA was arrested on a charge of animal cruelty
on March 19th for abandoning his 3-year-old female jack russell terrier/corgi
mix named Razzy in the Stop & Shop parking lot on March 7th. Greaney
and his wife adopted the dog from the Stratham SPCA on February 8, 2007
The couple adopted the dog, which had some behavioral problems but the dog was too much for the elderly couple to handle. Greaney tried to return Razzy to the SPCA but it was closed. Because his wife was so upset about having to give up Razzy, Greaney did not want to return home with the dog. He then left the dog in the bed of a truck at the grocery store.
Greaney turned himself into police and is scheduled to be in Exeter District Court on April 4th. Greaney is facing a Class A misdemeanor which carries a fine of up to $2000 and up to a year in jail.
When Razzy was left in the parking lot the temperature was 12 degrees. When Exeter ACO Neal Jones picked up the dog she was shivering and extremely cold. When the dog arrived at the NH SPCA it was discovered she had been adopted only 1 month prior. Steve Sprowl of the NH SPCA contacted Greaney who confessed to having left her in the back of the truck after driving around for a place to discard her.
