32 exotic birds found in unsanitary living conditions |

Alfalfa County prosecutors have charged 38-year old Verdia Bolster with six counts of cruelty to animals after finding that she neglected some of the 32 exotic birds in her home.
Bolster is accused of not providing care, food, water and cooling for the birds at her residence since July. In the charges, Bolster is referred to as an exotic bird breeder.
A Cherokee Police Officer stated that birds out of their cages had defecated in all the rooms in the upper living area of the home. He also noted that it appeared that her family had moved into the basement of the home to live away from the birds.
Cherokee Animal Control Officer April Rinkins and her assistant, Jon Ngugen were called to the home and gave the birds water and provided other care. Dr. John Tevebaugh, A veterinarian from Salt Plains Vet also responded to the home, as did the Cherokee Humane Society.
The abused birds included a green winged Macaw, an Umbrella Cockatoo, two Goffin Cockatoos, an African Grey Parrot and a Blue Front Amazon.
Update August 16, 2006
Bolster has been charged with 6 counts of animal cruelty in Alfalfa County District Court. If convicted she faces either 5 years in the state penitentiary, 1 year in the county jail or a fine not to exceed $5,000.
Update July 6, 2007:
According to court records, Bolster last preliminary hearing was on 5/7/7 and currently owes court fees in the amount of $526.40.
