Opinion Forum -- Joseph Mayer:

~ From jpiccott 12/31/08:  If ever there was a poster child for a lifetime ban on chronic animal abusers owning or caring for animals, it is Joseph Mayer.

The Bethlehem man has been convicted twice of seriously neglecting dozens of animals living on his farm in Lower Nazareth Township. Both times the judicial system slapped him on the wrist.

Now, he faces more charges filed earlier this month when a dead pony was spotted near his farm and nine ponies, two horses, a donkey and mule were seized.

It's obvious Mayer doesn't understand that he can't collect farm animals like baseball cards or model cars. Animals require proper food and water, constant care and medical treatment when necessary. And it doesn't hurt to shower them with love.

The system can't fail defenseless animals again. Mayer should be jailed and banned from ever owning animals again.
